Dolomites

The Dolomites, or Dolomiti in Italian, boast monumental peaks that rank among the most breathtaking sights in this region. The highest peak of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo mountain group, Cima Grande, towers at an impressive 2,999 meters, overlooking the surrounding landscape. It is flanked by two other major peaks: Cima Ovest to the west at 2,973 meters and Cima Piccola to the east at 2,857 meters. These three striking main peaks are complemented by numerous smaller rocky summits. Their worldwide fame is due to their unique shapes. Another distinctive feature of the peaks, often referred to as the Three Sisters, is the way erosion has shaped their surfaces, revealing the layered structure of limestone. This process has created a characteristic horizontally striped texture. This extraordinary mountain group has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.
